Franchise Owner PIRTEK Kent awarded subcontract with Todd Pacific Shipyards to complete required hose renewal for United States Coast Guard Polar Sea.
PIRTEK Kent, based in Seattle, WA is becoming well known for partnering with the Puget Sound marine industry based on their on-site hose and fitting expertise in the marine industry. Owned and operated by United States Army Veteran, Gabriel Gilliam, PIRTEK Kent is completing a major project to remove, fabricate and install over two hundred hoses on the United States Coast Guard Polar Sea at Todd Pacific Shipyards.
Gabe relies on his military knowledge and expertise to guide and train his team of service technicians to safely carry out removal, testing and installation of hoses on all kinds of ships. PIRTEK Works on a variety of vessels from cargo and bulk handling to passenger cruise ships and military applications.
"There was a lot of homework just in order to quote for the job," said Gilliam. "Much of the marine work we do requires U.S. Coast Guard approved products as well as hydrostatic testing of each hose after it is assembled. In our PIRTEK Center, we carry a wide range of U.S.C.G. approved hose and fittings and we also have a certified and calibrated hydrostatic tester allowing us to test hoses up to 10,000 P.S.I."
PIRTEK Kent bid the project over 4 months ago and won the contract by beating competitive quotes from several other local hose shops. "One of the big advantages we have is the ability to provide a complete on-site service to our customers using our fleet of on-site mobile hose trucks and trained technicians. Our niche is our 1 hour ETA emergency service but we've learned to expand our business by bidding on contracts like this."
Once awarded the contract, PIRTEK Kent began to assemble the products needed for the job. Upon receiving a call from Todd giving the go ahead to come aboard the ship, a team of fully trained PIRTEK Mobile Service Technicians were dispatched to Todd's Harbor Island Shipyard. The local team was supervised by Gil Moyers who works for the PIRTEK USA headquarters based in Florida. Gil was able to use his years of experience of being a hose service technician. He has also supervised some of the largest projects awarded to PIRTEK in various parts of the country.
Each hose assembly was removed, fabricated, tested, tagged, and re-installed per the requirements of Todd and the U.S.C.G. The job is on track to be completed this month well within the time frame required.
Although not the reason for getting this contract as it was based on a competitive bidding situation, Gilliam expects changes to existing State of WA Laws through ESB 5041, will lead to additional contracting opportunities for PIRTEK Kent and other veteran and service member owned Businesses. The changes which took effect June 10, 2010 are a big boost to veteran owned business's contracting opportunities with state and local governments.
