Spring Cleaning Part 1: Crafting a Modern Toolshed

It is finally spring! New life sparks new ideas, and suddenly your project list is full of home improvements and more building projects than you can shake a hammer at.

As the inspiration comes pouring in, it might be time to revamp that old toolshed or garage corner where all of your building gear is stashed. Let’s look at how to get that toolshed organized and give it a sleek, modern facelift.

The Modern Style

Modern style is all about clean lines, sleek metals, and a strong, industrial aesthetic. Typically, lighter metals like brushed steel work well with this type of look. You can accent with a bright red or blue, or if you prefer a subtler look, try accenting with dark browns similar to the colors in iron or rebar.

Achieving the clean lines of this modern style means lots of cabinets or shelves. This way, tools and supplies stay where they belong and keep your workspaces clean and neat. CBD’s Silver II Garage Cabinets are a perfect fit for this type of toolshed.

Step-By-Step Guide

1.  Make a plan.

Plan first. Think about what items you use the most, what you want easily accessible and any surface areas you want to create. Create categories of tools and supplies, and group them together. A good organizational system is one that’s easy to maintain, so take your regular habits into account.

It’s often helpful to create a scale drawing of your space using graph paper so you can draw out where you want cabinets and workspaces. If you decide you want to make some big changes, consider having one of our professional teams help. We can design out spaces and install custom shelving and cabinetry to make sure your dreams become a reality.

2.  Start with the major installations.

Once you have your plan, empty out your space and install any major hardware such as shelves, cabinets and counter spaces. Choose brushed or polished metals to get that industrial atmosphere. If you live in an area that’s earthquake-prone, this is a good time to install earthquake straps.

3.  Reload your space.

Slowly bring all of your tools and supplies back into your shed or garage, and find a place for them right away. Metal toolboxes and sturdy plastic bins make for great organization and add to the modern look. Remember to make lots of labels for all of your bins and boxes, especially if you have kids who like to raid your tool chest.

4.  Make it your own

Once everything is put away, take some time to make this space your own. Screw old license plates to the wall. Tack up racing pennants. Frame blueprints or city planning maps, and hang them above your workbench. Make the space enjoyable to work in, and odds are, you’ll actually finish up those spring projects this time around!
