Eagleville couple opens YOGO Blast in Oaks

UPPER PROVIDENCE — An Eagleville couple has brought a little culture to Oaks.

No, it’s not a highbrow art gallery or a Shakespearean playhouse, but the kind of culture that thrives in a self-serve ice-cold treat that’s hot once again — frozen yogurt.

With their independent “fro-yo” startup YOGO Blast, which is nicely situated across from Lowe’s and next to Puttin’ on the Dog in the Marketplace at Oaks, husband and wife partners Boguslaw “Dan” Gorczyca and Lisa Gorczyca are savoring some sweet success with an updated take on the frozen yogurt craze of the ’80s and ’90s.

“We’re dessert people, and when frozen yogurt started coming back we realized it’s a healthier way for people to get their frozen treats,” said Lisa, who added that the low-fat and nonfat YOGO Blast flavors top out at around 100 or 120 calories per serving.

Although the couple steered clear of the franchise route and its restrictions on business expansion, they did seek the help last spring of a Las Vegas-based company with the befitting nameFrozen Yogurt Store Developers.

“We found them after we decided to be our own brand,” Lisa noted. “They helped us set up the entire store — picking out the kind of yogurt we wanted to offer our customers, the design, colors, construction, equipment, and really got us up and working.”

The catchy name YOGO Blast, however, was not the product of corporate consultation, but of collective family imagination.

“Yes, between my husband and me and the children, we came up with a name we all liked,” Lisa said, laughing.

The social hangout vibe here at YOGO Blast seems to melt right off the graffiti-esque wall mural of a swirling tower of frozen yogurt painted by Emily Dupont shortly before the store opened earlier this month — which is precisely the effect Lisa intended when she sought the Methacton High School graduate’s talents.

“I wanted her to do a mural that kids would like and that would make them want to come here,” Lisa explained.

In keeping with the frozen yogurt revival trend elsewhere, you take control of the wheel at YOGO Blast, creating your masterpiece from the mainstay classics of vanilla and chocolate or an ever-changing canvas of flavors, like sea salt caramel pretzel, birthday cake and butter toffee popcorn, and then embellishing — or not embellishing — as you see fit.

Alternatives to the regular frozen yogurts include the nondairy pineapple-flavored Dole Whip — originally created for sale in Disneyland — plus sorbets and the nonfat no sugar-added vanilla frozen yogurt, which is about 80 calories for a 3-ounce serving.

Added to the menu since the opening: Swirl Fusion, which blends your creation a la Dairy Queen’s Blizzard.

The finishing touches available here for your 49-cents-an-ounce frozen yogurt base won’t overwhelm you with the possibilities.

“We didn’t want to offer too many toppings, so we picked the healthy toppings that my family likes, like blueberries, bananas, strawberries, because I think the fresh toppings taste best,” said Lisa.
